Mojacar - A Brief Introduction

Many people get turned off when they hear the word Costa in Spanish terms — they imagine noisy nightclubs, masses of tourists, English food and loads of people who have taken advantage of cheap prices when looking for Spanish property for sale. The Costa Almeria is not like this at all — this is a region of unspoilt beauty, history and culture. There is a lot of Costa Almeria property for sale and a lot of people are buying there but this area seems certain not to change too much.

Living in or around Mojacar gives so many options that they are hard to list! Nature lovers can visit the Cabo de Gata and Tabernas Desert parks where they can hike, walk, climb and enjoy the unspoilt landscapes. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy all kinds of water sports, ride horses and play golf. And, everybody can kick back and relax in a secluded sandy beach, cove or fishing village.

Mojacar

Mojacar is one of the Costa Almeria?s more interesting towns. Its history has been shaped by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans and Moors. It is also a town with a thriving foreign expat community who have opted to find a Mojacar property for sale when moving to Spain.

Things didn?t always look so positive here, however. In the 1960s local government leaders had to give land away free on the condition that applicants built on the land in an effort to stop people moving away from the town. This was so successful that the population actually grew and has remained constant ever since.

This also resulted in a lot of properties being built and in a healthy and consistent market for movers. Around half of local properties are now also owned by foreign nationals — the town welcomes foreign residents and word of mouth means that a steady stream of people choose to find a Mojacar property for sale.

Things to see in Mojacar

Even a simple evening walk around the city will throw up a lot of interesting sights — from architectural, historical and cultural perspectives. Despite the influx of foreign residents this remains a Spanish town with a Spanish culture. Places of interest to visit include:

* Casa del Torreon (Old Customs House): this was the place where people who wanted to enter Mojacar had to pay an entrance tax. They used to enter through the Puerta del la Almedina (Old City Gate).

* La Fuente Mora (Moorish fountain): this water source was set up in Roman times and still works (and is used) today. There is a history of the town on the walls.

* La Plaza Nueva (New Plaza): this square has one of the best views in the town.

* La Iglesia de Santa Maria (Church of Santa Maria): this church was built in the 14th century and was originally a fortress.

Conclusion

There is something for everyone in and around Mojacar.
